Public Affairs Officer, Shelby Composite Squadron
C/2d Lt. Kayah Wilson assumed command of the Shelby Composite Squadron’s cadet corps June 30, 2026, succeeding C/Capt. Logan Frankenberger during a change of command ceremony.
C/2d Lt. Wilson has been a member of CAP since November 29, 2022. As a homeschooled student she was challenged by her mother, Senior Member Kendria Wilson, to develop extracurriculars to support her schooling. C/2d Lt. Wilson laughed at her first impression when walking into the building on her first visit. She admits to being fearful when she was greeted at the door by the 1st Sergeant. She said the leadership opportunities and recognition for achievement were the initial reasons that drew her into membership.
C/2d Lt. Wilson has been a high-achieving and involved cadet in her squadron, community, state, and nation. She has been the epitome of the advancing cadet mentioned in the cadet oath. When asked what has caused her to strive towards advancing, C/2d Lt. Wilson responded that she was motivated by “the supportive morale of her two sisters currently serving in the U.S. Navy, her mom, and the possibilities and cadet activities in CAP.”
C/2d Lt. Wilson has enjoyed many experiences and roles in CAP. Inside the squadron, she has served as the noncommissioned officer for cadet leadership and supply. Outside of the squadron, she participated in aerospace education opportunities with local homeschoolers, served as a member of the Cadet Advisory Council at the Group and Wing level, attended MARSAR, RCLS, staffed the Alabama Wing Encampment, and attended the NCSA National Cadet Academy held at the USAF Academy. In addition to her recent role, C/2d Lt. Wilson has been a leader on the squadron’s Cyber Patriot team and participant of the color guard. Outside Civil Air Patrol, she volunteers with the Boys and Girls Club, competes in archery and participates in a local robotics team that competes nationally.
When asked what she hopes to instill in the squadron under her leadership, she responded that accountability and a lot of teamwork are needed to build trust. “Cadet accountability leads to ownership,” she said. Alongside her leadership, she is mindful of her future personal goals. C/2d Lt. Wilson is considering university options and applying for the International Air Cadet Exchange (IACE) experience.
The Shelby Composite squadron is grateful for the proven leadership capability it has in the new cadet commander, C/2d Lt. Kayah Wilson.
