From Risk Mapping to Early Action: Strengthening Landslide Preparedness in Sudan

The UNESCO Sudan Office is supporting the National Council of Civil Defence and the Higher Council for Environment and Natural Resources, in coordination with the Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture.

Through this partnership, UNESCO estimates that approximately 70,000 people facing landslide risks in Darfur and the Red Sea Hills could benefit directly from improved risk information, awareness and preparedness measures.

The assessment findings were shared with key national, academic and humanitarian stakeholders, including OCHA Sudan, the Geological Research Authority of Sudan, Red Sea University, Red Sea State authorities and the Federal Ministry of Culture and Information. Discussions explored opportunities for continued coordination, including technical follow-up on landslide risk reduction, research and public awareness, possible briefings for humanitarian actors, support to Disaster Risk Reduction Day activities, resource mobilization, and potential access to affected areas when security conditions permit
